What's wrong with standard candles?
Most candles are made with paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct left over from refining crude oil into gasoline and diesel. When burned, paraffin releases benzene and toluene into the air. These are the same compounds found in diesel exhaust.
Most candles are also scented with synthetic fragrance oils that contain phthalates - chemical compounds used to make scent last longer. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors linked to hormonal issues in both humans and animals. And because fragrance formulas are considered trade secrets in the US, brands aren't required to disclose what's in them. If a candle just says "fragrance" on the label - that's not an answer.
HERE'S WHY IT MATTERS FOR YOUR DOG
Your dog has 300 million scent receptors. You have around 6 million. What smells pleasant to you hits your dog at a completely different intensity.
More importantly, your dog spends their entire day at nose level, closer to the ground than you'll ever be. The compounds that a burning paraffin candle releases into the air settle where your dog breathes, eats, and sleeps. They also land on your dog's fur - and every time your dog grooms themselves, they ingest trace amounts of whatever has been burning in the room.
This isn't a reason to panic. It's a reason to care about what you burn.

Every Riley's Supply Co. candle starts with coconut-soy wax — one of the cleanest burning natural waxes available, with none of the petroleum byproducts that make paraffin a problem. We use phthalate-free fragrance and an unbleached cotton wick.
No paraffin. No phthalates. No synthetic dyes. No ingredients we wouldn't want Riley breathing in at the end of a long day of being a very good dog.
